HISTORY OF JUDO
The sport of judo originated from the beautiful island of Japan over a thousand years ago by a man named Jigoro Kano. This sacred art was practiced only by the samurai (professional soldiers) for many decades and involved the use of swords and even bows and arrows! Characterized as a combination of jujitsu, wrestling and mental discipline, the sport is practiced by many around the world today.
It is this combination (mental, physical and technique expertise) that has propelled the sport into popularity after the 1960s in North America.
In fact, it wasn’t up until 1964 that judo finally officially became an Olympic sport. This came with a strict set of rules to ensure the safety of the athletes and it is still an Olympic sport to this day.
